Bronchitis occurs when the tubes that carry air in your lungs become irritated or inflamed, usually resulting in coughing thick, discolored mucus. There are two types of bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis generally develops due to a respiratory infection or cold and typically improves with 7-10 days and has no lasting effects, though a persistent cough may linger for some time. Chronic bronchitis is often the result of smoking and characterized by constant inflammation and irritation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. If you have repeated bouts of bronchitis, this may be an indication of chronic bronchitis, which will require medical attention.

Symptoms of Bronchitis

Although everyone may have a slightly different presentation, the most common symptoms of bronchitis include the following:

  • Phlegm or mucus
  • Cough
  • Fever or chills
  • Fatigue

Generally, acute symptoms will improve after a few days, but it is common to have a nagging cough that can last for weeks. Individuals who have chronic bronchitis may experience repeated episodes with symptoms lasting up to one month each time.

Treating Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis can go away without medical treatment, though patients who have more severe cases may be prescribed antibiotics or other medications to reduce inflammation and keep their lung passages open. Cough syrup and practicing breathing exercises may also help alleviate symptoms.

Because bronchitis can lead to pneumonia, it is important to seek medical intervention if the issue does not improve. If you are experiencing any of the following, schedule an appointment to be seen as soon as possible:

  • Cough has lasted more than three weeks
  • Discolored mucus
  • Notice blood when you cough
  • Fever over 100 ° F
  • Experiencing wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Cough is preventing you from sleeping

avoid close contact with people with bronchitis

Avoiding Brochitis

Because acute bronchitis is typically caused by the same viruses that cause a cold or the flu, the best things you can do to reduce your risk of getting bronchitis is to avoid close contact with people with bronchitis and frequently wash your hands. If you have bronchitis, it is important to cover your cough to avoid spreading the infection to others.

Unlike acute bronchitis, which is a viral infection, chronic bronchitis is triggered by environmental factors and lifestyle choices, such as irritant exposure, air pollution, smoking, and more. Taking the following steps will reduce your risk of developing chronic bronchitis:

  • Surgical mask: Individuals with COPD can reduce their risk of developing issues by wearing a surgical mask while traveling, in crowds, and any time they may be exposed to fumes or dust.
  • Annual vaccination: Yearly vaccinations can protect you from getting the flu and certain types of pneumonia.
  • Stop smoking/avoid cigarette smoke: Cigarette smoke increases your risk of chronic bronchitis.
  • Wash your hands: Frequently washing your hands fusing alcohol-based hand sanitizers will reduce your risk of a viral infection.

Cost of Care Transparency
at Heritage Urgent & Primary Care

A visit to the hospital or emergency room to treat bronchitis can cost a substantial amount of money and take much longer for you to receive the care you need. At Heritage Urgent & Primary Care, our board-certified providers can provide you with high-quality care in a timely and cost-effective manner. If you require health services and are concerned about the cost involved, please refer to the following overview of our clinic’s policies. If you have any additional questions concerning billing, insurance, and/or payment options, please contact our staff.

Understand Insurance and Medicare Medicaid

All visits are billed under Primary Care and Primary Care Copay. We accept Medicare and are In Network with most major insurance providers and are happy to provide you with a list of accepted providers to ensure you are covered. If co-payments are required by your insurance plan, this will need to be paid prior to your appointment before check in. If you are not able to pay your co-payment, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. It is also important to be aware that not all services are covered through insurance plans. If your insurance company determines that a service is not covered, it will be your responsibility to pay the remaining balance.

Out-of-Network and
Self-pay Accounts

If you are not covered by insurance, or if your provider is out of network, you will be responsible for the entire charge of the appointment. If you are not able to pay the full balance of your bill, please contact our billing office at 866-557-2612. We are committed to ensuring that you receive the care you need and will do our best to help set up a payment plan to cover the costs of your care.

Further Payment and
Insurance Information

You will need to provide your current insurance information and bring your insurance card with you to your first visit. We also ask that you bring your card to subsequent visits so we can update your records as needed. Our staff will also help ensure that you maximize your insurance benefits and will file your claims and provide any necessary information to your insurance company.
