A laceration is categorized as a deep tear or cut in the skin or flesh that is typically jagged or torn. Unlike most scrapes and minor cuts, which can heal naturally, lacerations will require suturing and wound care to heal. To help inform treatment and ensure that we have a clear understanding of the nature of your laceration, you should be prepared to answer the following:

  • How did the laceration happen?
  • How long ago did the laceration occur?
  • Was the wound caused by an animal?
  • Are you experiencing any other symptoms, such as numbness or weakness in the hands, fingers, or any other part of the body?

When to Seek Treatment

It can be difficult to know whether or not it is necessary to seek medical treatment when you have a wound that requires attention. If your wound has any of the following attributes, it is likely necessary that you should seek medical intervention:

  • Bleeds without stopping
  • Caused by a scrape of a foreign object
  • Feels Numb
  • Half-an-inch deep or more
  • Hand/limb stops functioning properly following the cut
  • Jagged edge
  • Located on finger, hand, face, or joint
  • Longer than .75”

two different treatment options

Treating a Laceration

There are generally two different treatment options for dealing with a laceration, sutures or dermabond. In other cases, the wound may be left open and allowed to heal naturally, a process called healing by secondary intention. This is not generally the first choice but may be necessary if enough tissue has been lost or the edge cannot be brought together.

If it is determined that your wound requires stitches, the first step will be to clean the wound and numb the area. Once the area is cleaned and harmful dirt and germs have been removed, a small needle will be used to sew the cut together. Although the anesthetic will limit pain sensations, you will likely feel a tug as the stitches are pulled together.

follow aftercare instructions

Laceration Infection Signs

Following treatment of your wound, it is important to follow aftercare instructions to minimize your risk of developing an infection. Be sure to dispose of old bandages and dressings, disinfect and dry the wound when replacing dressings, and always wash your hands and work in a clean environment when tending to your bandages and dressings. If an infection does develop, it will typically present in the following ways:

  • Oozing pus
  • Pain in the area
  • Inflammation around the laceration
  • Fever and/or chills

If you notice any of these signs of infection, contact our office for a follow-up appointment.

Cost of Care Transparency
at Heritage Urgent & Primary Care

A visit to the hospital or emergency room to suture a laceration or tend to a wound can cost a substantial amount of money and take much longer for you to receive the care you need. At Heritage Urgent & Primary Care, our board-certified providers can provide you with high-quality care in a timely and cost-effective manner. If you require health services and are concerned about the cost involved, please refer to the following overview of our clinic’s policies. If you have any additional questions concerning billing, insurance, and/or payment options, please contact our staff.

Understand Insurance and Medicare Medicaid

All visits are billed under Primary Care and Primary Care Copay. We accept Medicare and are In Network with most major insurance providers and are happy to provide you with a list of accepted providers to ensure you are covered. If co-payments are required by your insurance plan, this will need to be paid prior to your appointment before check in. If you are not able to pay your co-payment, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. It is also important to be aware that not all services are covered through insurance plans. If your insurance company determines that a service is not covered, it will be your responsibility to pay the remaining balance.

Out-of-Network and
Self-pay Accounts

If you are not covered by insurance, or if your provider is out of network, you will be responsible for the entire charge of the appointment. If you are not able to pay the full balance of your bill, please contact our billing office at 866-557-2612. We are committed to ensuring that you receive the care you need and will do our best to help set up a payment plan to cover the costs of your care.

Further Payment and
Insurance Information

You will need to provide your current insurance information and bring your insurance card with you to your first visit. We also ask that you bring your card to subsequent visits so we can update your records as needed. Our staff will also help ensure that you maximize your insurance benefits and will file your claims and provide any necessary information to your insurance company.
