STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) are infections and diseases that spread through intercourse or other types of intimate contact. There are over 20 different types of STDs and STIs that can be caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses, and yeast. If left untreated, STDs can cause a range of serious health issues, which is why it is important to get tested on a regular basis, even if you or your partner do not have any symptoms.

Often women will include STD testing as part of their regular pelvic exam. During the exam, your doctor will examine your vulva and opening of your vagina for signs of irritation, genital warts, abnormal discharge, cysts, or other issues. Next, a speculum is placed into your vagina and opened, and a swab is used to collect cells from the surface, which is sent to a lab to be tested.

Types of STDs

The following are the most common types of STDs:

  • Chlamydia: Bacteria that can infect the throat, rectum, and reproductive organs. Typically presents as pain in the reproductive organs, abnormal discharge from genitals, and/or burning sensation while urinating.
  • Gonorrhea: Bacteria that affects reproductive organs. Typically presents as abnormal discharge from genitals and/or burning sensation while urinating.
  • Hepatitis B: Infects the liver and is spread through contact with the body fluids, open sores, or blood of another infected individual. Typically presents as the yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin. Can be very serious and even fatal if not treated soon enough, but easily treated when identified.
  • Herpes: Cause sores and redness on the rectal area, thighs, and genital area. Although the virus will never go away completely, the body’s immune system can generally reduce outbreaks and symptoms.
  • HIV/AIDS: Typically spread through intercourse and/or shared infected needles. Early symptoms present as flu-like symptoms and swollen glands. If HIV develops into AIDS, there are a range of complications that can develop.
  • HPV: Spread through intercourse. HPV presents as warts in the genital area, which have the potential to lead to cancer.
  • Syphilis: Bacteria passed through sexual contact. Typically presents as swollen lymph nodes and/or a small non-itchy rash initially and then a non-itchy rash on the feet and hands later. Can cause many complications if left untreated.
  • Trichomoniasis: Caused by a parasite spread during unprotected sex. Easy to cure but difficult to identify without testing.

STD Testing

There are several different types of STD tests that can be performed, with some tests checking for a single STD while others can test for a range of STIs. While each test varies slightly, the majority of tests include the following:

  • Physical exam to look for signs of infection, such as discharge or sores
  • Blood samples (often used to test for syphilis, herpes, and HIV)
  • Urine samples (often used to test gonorrhea and chlamydia)
  • Vaginal swabs and cultures to diagnose STD’s, bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection.

If your test results come back positive, we will provide you with an overview of the best course for treatment. Although not all STDs can be cured, many can be treated with prescription medications or antibiotics, which will also minimize the risk of spreading infection to your partner.

Cost of Care Transparency
at Heritage Urgent & Primary Care

A visit to the hospital to get tested for STD’s can cost a substantial amount of money and take much longer for you to receive the care you need. At Heritage Urgent & Primary Care, our board-certified providers can provide you with high-quality care in a timely and cost-effective manner. If you require health services and are concerned about the cost involved, please refer to the following overview of our clinic’s policies. If you have any additional questions concerning billing, insurance, and/or payment options, please contact our staff.

Understand Insurance and Medicare Medicaid

All visits are billed under Primary Care and Primary Care Copay. We accept Medicare and are In Network with most major insurance providers and are happy to provide you with a list of accepted providers to ensure you are covered. If co-payments are required by your insurance plan, this will need to be paid prior to your appointment before check in. If you are not able to pay your co-payment, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. It is also important to be aware that not all services are covered through insurance plans. If your insurance company determines that a service is not covered, it will be your responsibility to pay the remaining balance.

Out-of-Network and
Self-pay Accounts

If you are not covered by insurance, or if your provider is out of network, you will be responsible for the entire charge of the appointment. If you are not able to pay the full balance of your bill, please contact our billing office at 866-557-2612. We are committed to ensuring that you receive the care you need and will do our best to help set up a payment plan to cover the costs of your care.

Further Payment and
Insurance Information

You will need to provide your current insurance information and bring your insurance card with you to your first visit. We also ask that you bring your card to subsequent visits so we can update your records as needed. Our staff will also help ensure that you maximize your insurance benefits and will file your claims and provide any necessary information to your insurance company.
