Although most scrapes and minor cuts will heal naturally, more serious cuts or surgical incisions will require stiches to hold tissues together, allowing them to heal. Once the edges are pieced together, tissues and skin can fuse back together during the healing process. Although it is natural to feel a little anxious about getting stitches, especially if you have just experienced trauma, the procedure is generally painless and will result in minimal scarring.  In most cases, it will be necessary to schedule a follow up appointment to have your stitches removed, but this may not be necessary if the stitches dissolve on their own. The length of time necessary to have your stitches removed will depend on the severity of the wound and where the wound is located.

When to Seek Medical Care and Attention

It can be difficult to know whether or not it is necessary to seek medical treatment when you have a wound that requires attention. If your wound has any of the following attributes, it is likely necessary that you should seek medical treatment:

  • Bleeds without stopping
  • Caused by a scrape of a foreign object
  • Feels Numb
  • Half-an-inch deep or more
  • Hand/limb stops functioning properly following the cut
  • Jagged edge
  • Located on finger, hand, face, or joint
  • Longer than .75”

In most cases, a cut or laceration can be treated at one of our facilities; however, there are times when a wound is so severe that emergency intervention is necessary. If you are concerned that your wound is severe enough that you are at risk of losing a limb, vision, or even your life, emergency care should be pursued. For all other cases when the wound is more common, such as non-severe dog bites, small lacerations from work, minor cuts from cooking, scrapes from the outdoors, and/or everyday accidents, we can provide you with the care you need.

Stitches Procedure

If it has been determined that your wound requires stitches, the first step will be to clean the wound and numb the area. Once the area is cleaned and harmful dirt and germs have been removed, a numbing gel is placed on top of the cut to reduce or eliminate any pain or discomfort. Next, your doctor will use a small needle to sew the cut together. Although the anesthetic will limit pain sensations, you will likely feel a tug as the stitches are pulled together.

It is important to follow all aftercare instructions provided to you following this procedure. It is important to keep the area clean and dry and, if necessary, place a bandage over the stitches to ensure that you reduce your risk of developing an infection, avoid complications, and enjoy a fast recovery process.

Cost of Care Transparency
at Heritage Urgent & Primary Care

A visit to the hospital or emergency room to get stitches can cost a substantial amount of money and take much longer for you to receive the care you need. At Heritage Urgent & Primary Care, our board-certified providers can provide you with high-quality care in a timely and cost-effective manner. If you require health services and are concerned about the cost involved, please refer to the following overview of our clinic’s policies. If you have any additional questions concerning billing, insurance, and/or payment options, please contact our staff.

Understand Insurance and Medicare Medicaid

All visits are billed under Primary Care and Primary Care Copay. We accept Medicare and are In Network with most major insurance providers and are happy to provide you with a list of accepted providers to ensure you are covered. If co-payments are required by your insurance plan, this will need to be paid prior to your appointment before check in. If you are not able to pay your co-payment, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. It is also important to be aware that not all services are covered through insurance plans. If your insurance company determines that a service is not covered, it will be your responsibility to pay the remaining balance.

Out-of-Network and
Self-pay Accounts

If you are not covered by insurance, or if your provider is out of network, you will be responsible for the entire charge of the appointment. If you are not able to pay the full balance of your bill, please contact our billing office at 866-557-2612. We are committed to ensuring that you receive the care you need and will do our best to help set up a payment plan to cover the costs of your care.

Further Payment and
Insurance Information

You will need to provide your current insurance information and bring your insurance card with you to your first visit. We also ask that you bring your card to subsequent visits so we can update your records as needed. Our staff will also help ensure that you maximize your insurance benefits and will file your claims and provide any necessary information to your insurance company.
