When a foreign object or objects becomes lodged in a part of the body, it will be necessary to remove the object. Foreign body removal is most common among children, but is not uncommon among adults. While most adults are unaware how the foreign object became lodged, children often place these objects voluntarily. Foreign objects that have become lodged in the ear canal will typically cause pain in the ear, indicating the presence of the object. Drainage or bleeding and diminished ability to hear may also occur. Similar to the ear, foreign objects that become lodged in the nose will often present as pain as well as possible bleeding or nasal discharge.

How are Objects Removed?

Oftentimes, a foreign object can be easily removed by allowing the body to naturally remove the foreign object, as is the case when children swallow coins or other relatively benign objects. There are other instances when it is imperative that you seek immediate medical attention, such as when you or your child swallows a battery or when the foreign object interferes with breathing and is trapping the airway.

There are several different methods to removing foreign objects from the body, which will be determined by where the object is located and what type of object needs to be removed. The most common methods for foreign body removal include:

  • Bronchoscope: View and remove objects lodged in the airway
  • Endoscope: Remove foreign objects from the rectum or stomach
  • Magnets: Remove metal objects
  • Retractors: Remove objects in a variety of locations
  • Suction Machine: Pull objects out of the ear and nose
  • Irrigation: Washes objects out of the ear using warm water

If none of these methods are successful in removing the foreign body, it may be necessary to perform surgery. Treatment for additional damage caused by the foreign object may also be necessary.
