Urinary tract infections (UTIs) develop when bacteria enters the urinary tract and travels to the bladder, where it can spread to the kidneys. Women are more likely to experience a UTI, but it is a common condition that affects both men and women and all age groups. UTI’s are relatively easy to treat using antibiotics, but can become quite serious if left untreated, which is why it is so important to seek medical attention to ensure a proper diagnosis and that you are receiving appropriate treatment. UTIs are most commonly caused by not emptying one’s bladder following sexual activity or wiping from back to front. Individuals who have had one UTI are generally more likely to experience additional UTIs.

  • Frequent urge to urinate with minimal amount of urine produced
  • Painful, stinging, or burning sensation while urinating
  • Passing of small blood clots
  • Urine smells foul and/or is cloudy
  • Back pain
  • Tenderness in lower abdomen
  • Chills or fever

Treating a Urinary Tract Infection

The most effective treatment option for UTIs is antibiotic treatment. How long treatment should last will depend on a rage of factors, including the type of bacteria causing the UTI and the patient’s health history. UTI symptoms typically improve within one to three days after treatment begins. It is important to continue taking the antibiotics for the prescribed duration even if you do begin to feel better.

Urinary Tract Infections in Women

Though rare in men, it is estimated that nearly half of all women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime. This may be due to the fact that women’s urethras are shorter, which allows for bacteria to reach the bladder quicker. Some women are also more susceptible to develop a UTI due to pre-existing conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, or pregnancy. Oftentimes women will suffer multiple infections, either because of partially treated prior infections or because the same strain became antibiotic resistant.

Urinary Tract Infections in Men

Although everyone may have a slightly different presentation, the most common symptoms of a urinary tract infection include the following:

  • Frequent urge to urinate with minimal amount of urine produced
  • Painful, stinging, or burning sensation while urinating
  • Passing of small blood clots
  • Urine smells foul and/or is cloudy
  • Back pain
  • Tenderness in lower abdomen
  • Chills or fever

Urinary Tract Infections in Children

UTIs are also very uncommon in children, with approximately 2% of boys having a UTI by the age of five and 8% of girls. UTIs in children typically present with the same symptoms, although children may also become irritable and/or develop a fever. If your child is exhibiting symptoms indicative of a UTI, it is important to have them diagnosed as soon as possible to avoid potential kidney damage or other possible complications.

Cost of Care Transparency
at Heritage Urgent & Primary Care

A visit to the hospital or emergency room to treat a urinary tract infection can cost a substantial amount of money and take much longer for you to receive the care you need. At Heritage Urgent & Primary Care, our board-certified providers can provide you with high-quality care in a timely and cost-effective manner. If you require health services and are concerned about the cost involved, please refer to the following overview of our clinic’s policies. If you have any additional questions concerning billing, insurance, and/or payment options, please contact our staff.

Understand Insurance and Medicare Medicaid

All visits are billed under Primary Care and Primary Care Copay. We accept Medicare and are In Network with most major insurance providers and are happy to provide you with a list of accepted providers to ensure you are covered. If co-payments are required by your insurance plan, this will need to be paid prior to your appointment before check in. If you are not able to pay your co-payment, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. It is also important to be aware that not all services are covered through insurance plans. If your insurance company determines that a service is not covered, it will be your responsibility to pay the remaining balance.

Out-of-Network and
Self-pay Accounts

If you are not covered by insurance, or if your provider is out of network, you will be responsible for the entire charge of the appointment. If you are not able to pay the full balance of your bill, please contact our billing office at 866-557-2612. We are committed to ensuring that you receive the care you need and will do our best to help set up a payment plan to cover the costs of your care.

Further Payment and
Insurance Information

You will need to provide your current insurance information and bring your insurance card with you to your first visit. We also ask that you bring your card to subsequent visits so we can update your records as needed. Our staff will also help ensure that you maximize your insurance benefits and will file your claims and provide any necessary information to your insurance company.
