Pink eye (conjunctivitis) occurs when the transparent membrane that covers the white of your eyeball and lines your eyelid becomes infected or inflamed, resulting in the white of your eyes to appear pink or reddish. Pink eye can occur due to bacteria, viruses, or allergens and may affect one or both eyes. Bacterial conjunctivitis often develops due to contact lenses that are not properly cleaned or using someone else’s contact lenses. Both bacterial and viral conjunctivitis often occur along with a sore throat or colds. The following increase an individual’s risk of developing pink eye:
- Being exposed to someone infected with bacterial or viral conjunctivitis
- Allergic conjunctivitis (being exposed to something you are allergic to)
- Using contact lenses, especially extended-wear lenses
Although everyone may have a slightly different presentation, the most common symptoms of pink eye include the following:
- Redness
- Itching
- Crusting on the lashes or eyelids
- Scratchy or gritty feeling in the eye
- Swollen eyelids
- Vision problems
- Severe eye pain
- Symptoms persist or worsen

Diagnosing and Treating Pink Eye
Pink eye is generally easy to diagnose simply by reviewing your health history and asking a few questions. If your symptoms are severe, it may be necessary to take a sample of liquid for analysis, but this is not generally necessary. Treating pink eye is generally centered around relieving symptoms rather than correcting the issue, which should clear up in 5-7 days. Warm or cold compresses, using a wet cloth to clean your eyelids, and artificial tears are often recommended for symptom relief. If you have viral conjunctivitis, antiviral medication may be prescribed, or if you have allergic conjunctivitis, you may be prescribed decongestants, antihistamines, or other drugs that help control inflammation. Individuals who wear contact lenses will need to throw away their current lenses and wear glasses until symptoms have disappeared.

How to Prevent Pink Eye
The best steps you can take to preventing pink eye from developing include the following:
- Wash your hands frequently, especially after touching or rubbing your eyes, applying ointments or eye drops, and after removing discharge from your eyes
- Do not share eyeglasses, contact lenses, or containers for contact lenses
- Do not share makeup brushes and/or cosmetics
- Wash towels, sheets, washcloths, and pillowcases in hot water and detergent
If you follow these steps, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing pink eye.

Cost of Care Transparency
at Heritage Urgent & Primary Care
A visit to the hospital or emergency room to treat pink eye can cost a substantial amount of money and take much longer for you to receive the care you need. At Heritage Urgent & Primary Care, our board-certified providers can provide you with high-quality care in a timely and cost-effective manner. If you require health services and are concerned about the cost involved, please refer to the following overview of our clinic’s policies. If you have any additional questions concerning billing, insurance, and/or payment options, please contact our staff.
Understand Insurance and Medicare Medicaid
All visits are billed under Primary Care and Primary Care Copay. We accept Medicare and are In Network with most major insurance providers and are happy to provide you with a list of accepted providers to ensure you are covered. If co-payments are required by your insurance plan, this will need to be paid prior to your appointment before check in. If you are not able to pay your co-payment, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. It is also important to be aware that not all services are covered through insurance plans. If your insurance company determines that a service is not covered, it will be your responsibility to pay the remaining balance.
Out-of-Network and
Self-pay Accounts
If you are not covered by insurance, or if your provider is out of network, you will be responsible for the entire charge of the appointment. If you are not able to pay the full balance of your bill, please contact our billing office at 866-557-2612. We are committed to ensuring that you receive the care you need and will do our best to help set up a payment plan to cover the costs of your care.
Further Payment and
Insurance Information
You will need to provide your current insurance information and bring your insurance card with you to your first visit. We also ask that you bring your card to subsequent visits so we can update your records as needed. Our staff will also help ensure that you maximize your insurance benefits and will file your claims and provide any necessary information to your insurance company.
