Family Medicine Physician

Growing up with family members in the medical field played an influential role in Dr. Arlene Chua’s early interest in medicine. However, it was her mother’s diagnosis with breast cancer that truly solidified her decision to become a physician.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology and went on to attend ECU School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina. Initially drawn to general surgery due to her love for hands-on work and procedures, she began her training in that specialty. Over time, though, she discovered that her greatest fulfillment came from building meaningful relationships with her patients—leading her to transition into Family Medicine. She completed her training at Chesterfield Family Practice, affiliated with Virginia Commonwealth University.

At that point in her life, Dr. Chua was raising three young children and sought a specialty that allowed for a better balance between her professional and personal life. Emergency Medicine offered the flexibility she needed, and she spent many years honing her skills in acute care.

Now that her children are grown, she has returned to her original passion: Family Medicine. She is excited to reestablish long-term patient relationships and provide the continuity of care she always envisioned. While she remains highly confident in acute care, she is eager to deepen her expertise in chronic care, obesity medicine, hormonal replacement therapy, and integrative medicine.

Dr. Chua has also participated in multiple medical missions and hopes to continue that work in the future. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys gardening, hiking, exercising, traveling, and spending time with her family. With strong family values at the core of her practice, she is excited to become a trusted part of her patients’ lives and care journeys.
