Types of Men’s Healthcare Services

Why Are Men’s Healthcare Services Important?

All adults should visit their health care provider on some sort of regular basis, even when they are healthy. The purpose of these visits is to:

  1. Screen for any diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.
  2. Determine and identify, if possible, and reduce future disease risks, such as high cholesterol and obesity.
  3. Discuss your alcohol use and safe drinking.
  4. Discuss any tobacco use and tips on how to possibly quit.
  5. Encourage a healthier lifestyle, like eating healthily and embracing regular exercise.
  6. Update all vaccinations.
  7. Maintain a form of relationship with your health provider in the event of illness.
  8. Discuss any medications or supplements that you are currently taking.

Why Preventive Healthcare is Important

Even if you feel simply fine and your version of healthy, you should still see your health provider for regular preventative checkups. These simple visits can easily help you avoid health problems in your future. For example, the only way to identify if you have high blood pressure is to have it checked on a regular basis. High blood sugar and high cholesterol levels also might not have any noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. A simple blood test can quickly check for these conditions.

Below are some of the tests that could be done or scheduled:

  1. A blood pressure check.
  2. A blood sugar check.
  3. Your cholesterol levels.
  4. Colon cancer screening test.
  5. A depression screening.
  6. An HIV test.
  7. Breast cancer screening test.
  8. Osteoporosis screening.
  9. Cervical cancer screening test.
  10. Lung cancer screening test.
  11. Tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Your health provider will recommend how often you should schedule your visits.

Another part of preventive healthcare is to learn how to recognize changes in your body that might not be normal. This will allow you to be proactive so you can see your provider right away. Changes could include:

  1. A lump anywhere on your body.
  2. Losing weight without trying to do so.
  3. A lingering fever.
  4. A cough that will not go away.
  5. Body aches and pains that persist and do not go away.
  6. Changes or blood in your stools.
  7. Skin changes or sores remaining or getting worse.
  8. Other changes or symptoms that are new or do not go away.

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy

In addition to seeing your health provider for regular checkups, there are simple things you can do to stay healthy and help lower your risk of any diseases. If you already have a health condition, taking these additional steps can help you manage it.

  1. Do not smoke or use tobacco.
  2. Exercise for at least 150 minutes a week, 2 hours, and 30 minutes.
  3. Eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat or nonfat dairy.
  4. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation, no more than two drinks a day for men and no more than one drink a day for women.
  5. Maintain a healthy weight.
  6. Always wear a seatbelt and use car seats if you have children.
  7. Do not use illegal drugs.
  8. Practice safe sex.
